Organized a orientation programme on “EBSCO EconLit” database , organized by Library on July 8, 2014 at 9.45 AM to 11 AM.

Venue: First Floor, Main Building, CESS.

 
This orientation programme gave the overview about Econ Lit database as  what are the sources covered in the database (which we have subscribed only), how to search different materials and some literature search techniques to discover the resources.

Report on National Training Programme on

“KOHA-An Open Source Integrated Library System”

November 6-8, 2013

The training programme on KOHA-An Open Source Integrated Library System was conducted during November 6-8, 2013.  A total of 30 participants have attended the programme.  Dr.M.R.Murali Prasad, Librarian, Centre for Economic and Social Studies has organized the training programme as a Coordinator. The entire training programme was in Live practice with 30 computers as each computer was having its participant. The following are the brief details of the entire three days programme:

Day 1

 Session 1 (9.30 AM to 11.00AM)

Theme of the session    :               Inauguration Programme

As a programme Coordinator Dr.M.R.Murali Prasad, Librarian welcomed the delegates and overviewed the need of programme.  The inaugural programme was presiding by Prof.C.Ramachandraiah, CESS and the Chief Guest of the programme was Prof.S.Galab, Director, CESS has addressed the delegates.  The inaugural speech has given by Dr.E.Rama Reddy, Librarian (Rtd.), University of Hyderabad and he also inaugurated the training programme and followed by High Tea.

After the inauguration programme all the participants has taken a group photo with guests.

Session 2 (11.15AM to 1.00 PM)

Theme of the session    :               Installation of KOHA on Ubuntu

Name of the Speaker     :               Dr.M.R.Murali Prasad, CESS

Summary of the lecture:               The speaker briefed about the KOHA software, Live DVD and delivered a presentation on Installation of KOHA software.

Session 3 (2.00 PM to 3.30PM)

Theme of the session    :     Intro to some Ubuntu and

SQL Commands

Name of the speaker     :   Mr.Jogiraju, Librarian, Malla                                            Reddy Engineering College, Hyderabad

Summary of the lecture                :   The speaker executed some commands of Ubuntu and SQL, which required running KOHA software in Libraries.

Session 4 (3.45PM to 5.00PM)

Theme of the Session :  Installation of KOHA software

Name of the speaker:    Dr.M.R.Murali Prasad and Mr.Jogiraju

Summary of the lecture                :               The speakers discussed about the live installation of the software and all the participants successfully installed the KOHA software in their systems and practiced on some system preferences and administrative tools of KOHA software.

 Day 2

 Session 1 (9.30 AM to 11.00AM)

Theme of the session    :               Cataloguing Module of KOHA – I

Name of the Speaker     :               Dr.M.R.Murali Prasad, CESS

Summary of the lecture                :               The speaker covered the regular Cataloguing practice on KOHA software

and practiced with various MARC tags, entering of bibliographic records, saving records, editing records and items in addition to the entering of Library names, groups and items in the Cataloguing Module.

Session 2 (11.15AM to 1.00 PM)

Theme of the session    :               Cataloguing Module of KOHA – II

Name of the Speaker     :               Mr.Sandeep Baushar, Librarian, Dr. Bedekar Institute of Management, Mumbai

Summary of the lecture:               The speaker covered the customization of Cataloguing template as per library needs and also showed that how to download MARC records from other Library catalogues like Library of Congress, etc.

Session 3 (2.00 PM to 3.30PM)

Theme of the session    :               Patron Management Module of KOHA

Name of the speaker     :               Dr.M.R.Murali Prasad

Summary of the lecture                :               The speaker practiced various methods involving in Patron Management module of KOHA like defining of Patrons as Staff, Research Scholars and Students, how to add patron with details, upload image of patron, password setting, setting preferences for patron, etc. with participants.

Session 4 (3.45PM to 5.00PM)

Theme of the Session    :               Circulation Module of KOHA

Name of the speaker     :               Mr.Sandeep Baushar

Summary of the lecture                :               The speakers explained the different parameters of Circulation module like parameters setting for different patrons, checked out, check in, renewal procedures, etc. and the same was practiced by the participants with examples.

Day 3

 Session 1 (9.30 AM to 11.00AM)

Theme of the session    :               Serials Control Module of KOHA

Name of the Speaker     :               Mr.Sandeep Baushar

Summary of the lecture                :               In this session the speaker covered the Serial Control module through

creating a Journal record and its periodicity, how to receive an issue, how to maintain journal subscription through automation, how to create an analytical entry to a journal issue, etc. with a journal issue and its contents.

Session 2 (11.15AM to 1.00 PM)

Theme of the session    :               Backup of Marc records and Reports Generation

Name of the Speaker     :               Mr.Sandeep Baushar

Summary of the lecture : The speaker showed and practiced with examples that how to take backup of marc records of their library data and how to generate reports for their requires like circulation, cataloguing, etc. with all the participants.

Session 3 (2.00 PM to 3.30PM)

Theme of the session: OPAC and Acquisition module of KOHA

Name of the speaker : Dr.M.R.Murali Prasad

Summary of the lecture                :               The speaker covered the Online Public Access Catalogue module and the Acquisition module of KOHA with examples like how to search catalogue with different parameters like author, keyword, title, suggesting a book, holding a book, saving search results, etc.  And, practiced advanced search methods with participants.  Also, he covered the some basic features of Acquisition module like entering vendors list, making list of books, ordering of books, receiving of books, etc.

Session 4 (3.45PM to 5.00PM)

Theme of the Session    :               Valedictory programme

As a Coordinator, Dr.M.R.Murali Prasad summarized the entire three days training programme sessions to the Chief Guests of the valedictory session.  The programme was presiding by Dr.P.Padmanabha Rao, Registrar, CESS and Prof. C.Beena, Director, Indian Council of Social Science Research – Southern Regional Centre delivered her addressed the delegates as a Chief Guest.  And, Prof.V.Vishwa Mohan, Department of Library and Information Science, Osmania University, Hyderabad has delivered his valedictory speech.  Some of the participants expressed/shared their views on the training programme.  Then, Prof.C.Beena distributed the Participation Certificates to the delegates.  The three days programme ended by the vote of thanks give by Dr.M.R.Murali Prasad and followed by High Tea.

I would like to inform you that we are organizing a National Training Programme on KOHA – an Open Source Integrated Library System on November 6-8, 2013 at Centre for Economic and Social Studies(CESS), Hyderabad.  Please make convenient to attend,if you are in need to learn KOHA or please transfer this information to your colleagues.
 
Please note that, this programme is having only Live practical classes, no theory classes.
 
The following are the few details.
Objectives
 
i.                     Live practical classes with live demo through a live CD.
ii.                   Give an in-depth understanding of KOHA software for the use of library automation.
iii.                 Conduct hands on experience for the installation and customization on Ubuntu Operating system.
iv.                 Provide extensive hands on training to the participants so as to enable them to work independently after the training programme.
 
Target Participants
 
Library and Information Science Professionals includes Faculty, Library Personnel, Research Scholars and students.
 
The number of participants is limited to 25 and the preference will be given to first-cum-first basis that have basic knowledge of handling computers, due to limited computers.
Registration Fee
 
Participation fee: Rs.2000/- (non-refundable and the fee should be payable through DD only)
 
The fee includes a Live CD of Software, Training programme kit, refreshments and working lunches only.
 
Accommodation
 
The accommodation is not provided by the organizers.  But, the organizers will help the participants to find suitable accommodation.
